In this world which puts physical beauty on a pedestal, having a face with a lot of blemishes is certainly no good for your self-confidence.

One of the most common skin imperfections is acne, usually occurring to teenagers but could also bother older ones, even middle-aged people.

Mostly, acne is caused by excess dirt and oil on skin which clog the pores, creating a breeding ground for bacteria leading to inflammation and infection.

Breakouts are also believed to be caused by stress, menstrual cycle, diet, and cosmetics. Hormonal imbalance also increases the production of sebum, the culprit in clogging pores aside from dirt, is also one reason for pimples.

There are many products in the market claiming to clear up acne in no time and among these products are essential oils.

They are said to be effective in treating acne because they dissolve sebum and destroy bacteria while preserving the skin from damage.

The most known essential oils for acne are:

- Rosewood oil. Suggested for persons with extremely oily skin since, when it is topically applied, it facilitates reduction of sebum secretion.

When the production of sebum is decreased, it would limit skin breakouts. This essential oil has

high capacity to dry thus it is great for spot treatment of affected areas. Because of its drying properties, it is not recommended for those with sensitive or dry skin.

- Jojoba oil. This essential oil is great as skin moisturizer for all skin types since it has a stable substance which is similar to that of sebum. Further, it has antioxidants which makes it all the more effective in controlling acne.

- Lavender Oil. Recognized for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and soothing characteristics, Lavender oil could serve as antiseborrhoeic and deodorant. They can also fight eczema, spots, and seborrhoea. As acne treatment, Lavender oil prevents new zits and clears the redness of acne prone skin. When it is intended to be applied on the skin, lavender essential oil should be diluted unless upon advice by a licensed homeopathic professional.

- Tea Tree Oil. Often used in cleansing wounds, Tea Tree Oil has exceptional antibacterial properties which make it effective in eliminating acne bacteria. Frequently used instead of benzoyl peroxide in healing acne problems, Tea Tree oil is said to clear up the skin fast while soothing the affected skin. Initial topical application should be in mild doses. Diluting tea tree oil in aloe vera gel is often advised for first time users.

Essential oils are pure substances and could trigger allergies when improperly administered. Even though they are all natural, it is best to consult health professionals or certified essential oil therapists for guidance as to their correct usage and application.
